In this post I am going to explain everything and by the end of you will be able to find a microphone perfect for you whatever the budget.
Since I started working for YourGamingSetup 1 year ago I have covered the microphones used by every big gaming YouTuber and I am an expert when it comes to this kind of thing so you can put your trust in me.
The difference between this guide and the other ones..
Often with these sorts of guides the authors will just put a product at number 1 purely because it’s expensive and they get paid a bigger commission (shocking I know). I’m not like the other guys I promise! In this post I am going to show you 10 different microphones perfect for gamers and give you an honest overview on each one.
The 10 Best Microphones
#1 Blue Yeti Blackout – For the Beginner
Blue Yeti Blackout Review
If you have spent even just 1 hour watching some big Gaming YouTubers or any Twitch Streamers then you will most likely have listened to their voice thanks to the Blue Yeti.
The Youtuber Leafy actually used a version of this microphone to build his semi-successful Youtube career and even though his channel has dropped slightly in popularity now, he can still credit the blue yeti for helping record his videos and for earnings big bucks from his millions of views.
This is by far the best microphone for someone with a smaller budget
Great budget microphone
Simple USB plug & play
No need to install drivers
Comes in different colors
Used by YouTubers like Leafy
Headphone jack on the microphone
Volume controls and mute button on microphone
Picks up everything including the smallest sounds so you may need a pop filter to get the best out of this mic.
#2 Audio Technica AT2035 – For the almost “pro”
Audio Technica AT2035 Review
Coming in at number 2 is the slightly less popular Audio Techinca AT2035. Let me tell you something though, this microphone is definitely underrated in my opinion and I would put it in at number 1 if it was slightly more cheaper. It is a definite upgrade to the Blue Yeti and used by captainsparlklez the big time minecraft Youtuber.
Uses high quality XLR cable
Used by YouTubers like CaptainSparklez
Doesn’t pick up sounds from the sides or rear
It’s a little bit more difficult to set up and requires phantom power to work. At the same time however this gives you a much higher quality of recording.
#3 Shure PGA27 – For The Minimalist Pro
Shure PGA27 Review
If you’ve got a large audience and the budget then the Shure PGA27 is the microphone for you. This microphone is going to make you sound so good and I am serious. It has the ability to give your voice that deep low move trailer voice over man sound.
Large diaphragm cartridge
Records perfect bright highs
Cuts out unwanted background noise
Gives voice over style deep bassy lows
Used by the biggest gaming Youtubers in the world
This is not a simple easy plug and pay microphone and will take a bit more time to set up.
#4 Shure SM7B – For The “Got cash to burn” Pro Gamer
Shure SM7B Review
This is by far the highest quality microphone in the list and if you use this you’re going to be able to sound like the likes of Joe Rogan if you edit the post audio correctly. There are even rumors Michael Jackson used this for a song which if true gives owners of this mic some serious bragging rights.
Cardioid Dynamic Mic
No popping or distortion
Frequency settings adjustable
Crisp pristine studio sounding audio
Works well without sounding proofing your room
Used by Joe Rogan and Michael Jackson
Quite difficult to set up for some people and definitely not a plug and play straight out the box type of microphone.
#5 Audio Technica AT2020 – For The Budget Almost Pro Gamer
Audio Technica AT2020 Review
You might be thinking didn’t I already cover this microphone? The answer to that is no I covered the Audio technica AT2035 which is pretty much the younger sister microphone to the AT2020. If you like the 2035 but want to save some money then the 2020 is an option as it still almost produces the same recording capabilities.
Cheaper than the 2035
High Quality XLR mic
Nice smooth lows, mids and highs
This microphone is a little bit old now
#6 Antlion Audio ModMic – For The Ex Headset Gamer
Antlion Audio ModMic Review
A big mistake gamers sometimes make is buying an expensive gaming headset expecting the microphone to be amazing when most of the time they really are not. Antlion Audio a 6 year old American based company have created a low cost high quality solution by making a clip on mic attachable to a pair of headphones.
Made for gamers
Both Omni and Uni direction
Extremely portable and durable
Mute button feels a bit cheap and sometimes doesn’t work great.
#7 V-Moda Boom Pro – For The Minimalist Gamer
V-Moda Boom pro Review
If you don’t want a super expensive studio quality mic and looking for something really small and discreet then you should try a clip on mic. You can attach one onto your headphones really easily and even though they are super small you can still get a great recording out of them.
One of my favorite audio companies V-Moda have created one especially for gamers. V-Moda are known for their super durable products and their products are actually used by the top DJ’s in the world which surely says a lot.
Can’t find one right now 🙁
Comes with long cable
V-Moda is a reputable company
Volume control button doesn’t work great
#8 Rode NT-USB USB Condenser – For The Classic Gamer
Rode NT-USB Review
This USB microphone comes Australian audio company Rode and although they have other microphones this is their only microphone featured in this guide. The reason for that is because this for a lot of people is regarded as one of their best microphones and great for gamers.
Great Quality USB Mic
Can adjust sound settings on mic
Zero Latency Headphone monitoring
Stand that comes with the mic feels cheap
#9 Zalman ZMMIC1 – For The Broke Moms Basement Gamer
Zalman ZMMIC1 Review
Finally last but not least I’m going to suggest the Zalman microphone with you. If you’re looking for the cheapest option out there then this is for sure one of them. Salman is a south korean company and they also make computer tower cases.
This microphone from Zalman will clip onto clothing like a t-shirt for example or a pair of headphones. It comes with a super long cable which can good for some people and a bit too much for others
Not long lasting
Sound not high in quality (sound sucks)
#10 Razer Sieren – For The Big Ego Gamer
Razer seiren pro Review
This is actually the only usb microphone in this list exclusively targetted for gamers which is something we will most likely see a lot more of in the future. I have to say that this microphone probably looks a lot better than it actually sounds and it’s kind of like people buying a gaming headset just so they can listen to music (it’s dumb).
I am including the Razer Sieren in this list because Hey…. maybe you’re the type of person who wants a really cool looking Microphone or just a huge Razer fan boy.
Not great for the price
Reports of the microphone breaking easily
So there we have it.. a list of 10 great microphones perfect for gamers. Everything from the lowest to the highest price point, XLR microphones and USB microphones, fancy and minimalist. No matter why type of gamer you are there is definitely a microphone here in this list that is just perfect for you. Now it’s your job to choose it and give it a new home. When you get the microphone you might also start thinking about getting the best gaming chair, if you do make sure to use our website for another great top 10 list.
